Leather Classifications

Top Grain Leather: Leather from the uppermost layer of a hide and the highest quality part of a hide.

Bi-Cast or Splits: The second layer of the hide after the top grain has been removed.  Commonly used for the sides and backs of all leather upholstery items.

Pure Aniline Leather: Top grain leather that is dyed for color without any pigments applied.  The hides will exhibit some natural characteristics such as healed scars, scratches, neck and belly wrinkles.  The leather will also develop a rich patina over time and will fade with prolonged exposure to sunlight

Pigmented Leather: Pigments have been applied to any top grain leather along with a clear topcoat.  Pigmented leathers are easy to maintain and have maximum resistance to wear, soiling, and fading from light.

Non-Pigmented Leather: No pigments have been applied to the leather. The hides are usually the very best quality and have been aniline dyed for color.

Protected Aniline Leather: Top grain leather that is dyed for color and then receives pigment to ensure color consistency.  The pigment ensures fade resistance and helps the leather wear over time, and a clear water based topcoat provides additional protection.  This leather is easy to maintain and has maximum resistance to wear, soiling, and fading from light.

Semi-Aniline Leather: Pure aniline leather with a small amount of pigment or clear finish, which allows natural characteristics of the hide to show through while offering some of the benefits of color consistency and increased wear ability.

Nubuk Leather: Top grain leather aniline dyed for color and then polished to create a nap.  This leather will have color variations and show some natural markings.  Prolonged exposure to sunlight will fade these leathers.

Distressed Leather:  Aniline dyed leather with an artificially worn and aged appearance.

Antiqued Leather: Leather that is dyed with one color over another to create highlights and an aged appearance.

Embossed Leather: Leather that has been stamped using heat and high pressure to create a pattern on the hide (alligator, ostrich, geometric, flowers, etc.).
